A.D.: NEW ORLEANS AFTER THE DELUGE
PANTHEON
Saying that Josh Neufeld has accomplished something within a beautiful graphic novel about a horrific event would be an immense understatement. It’s easy for a lot of us to forget Katrina, which is bizarre because for many, it’s a part of history that will shape their lives for years to come. Neufeld’s work centers around seven people who the reader becomes immensely familiar with in the early stages of the book. The strong sense of foreboding comes to fruition when the inevitable happens: the hurricane, the levies, and the awful aftermath. It’s truly a harrowing graphic novel to get through, but it’s done in a classy, completely respectful way. In terms of style, it often reminded me of Bechdel’s Fun Home. Where have you heard Neufeld before? Well, most notably, he’s done the art for American Splendor. As writer and artist here in A.D., he truly shines. This is a worthy addition to any collector of graphic novels, and would even be a great read for those interested in current affairs who might not usually try things in the GN format.
