Indie Street Reads #23 • 02/12/10

KINDLING
CHRONICLE
This review might be more aptly titled, “Indie Street Looks” due to the lack of actual reading to be done in this collection. Don’t let that distract you, though, these prints are stunning. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of High Fructose and Juxtapose… getting into the ‘lowbrow’ movement. Some art of this sort really turns me off. However, James Jean really nails it. Blending whimsical fantasy with gritty authenticity, I personally can’t wait to have a space big enough to put these prints on my walls. That’s another commendation for Chronicle: generally, print books come on normal glossy paper and leave perforated edges, which makes you look like you’ve got a room adorned in Seventeen Magazine clippings. These prints are easily removed and come printed on thick stock, so you don’t have to be embarrassed to hang these things. If you can’t bring yourself to remove them from the giant envelope-like book, it also works as a stunning coffee-table book. The composition of the entire package is appealing and works only to compliment the prints within. Please do yourself a favor and check this one out.
